WLUM-FM, widely known as “FM 102/1,” was the premier destination for alternative and modern rock in the Milwaukee metropolitan area for three decades. Broadcasting on 102.1 FM, the station built a massive following by championing a mix of iconic 90s grunge, 2000s indie rock, and the latest emerging alternative hits. As an independent voice in a landscape of corporate radio, FM 102/1 was deeply rooted in local culture, serving as a platform for Milwaukee-based artists and hosting major regional events that defined the city’s music scene.

The station’s programming was anchored by high-profile local personalities and signature musical events. Listeners started their days with the irreverent humor and community focus of the Kramp and Adler morning show, while specialized segments like Retro Brunch offered a nostalgic deep dive into the roots of the alternative genre. The station was also famous for the Big Snow Show, its annual winter concert series that brought world-class alternative acts to the Milwaukee stage. While the frequency transitioned to a Contemporary Worship format in late 2025, FM 102/1 remains a cornerstone of Milwaukee’s broadcasting history.
