KHKA – CBS Sports Radio 1500 AM is a radio station located in Honolulu, Hawaii. KHKA Radio is owned by Blow Up, LLC and broadcasts a sports talk format. CBS Sports Radio – KHKA AM 1500 is the Hawai’i home of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. In addition, the station carries select New York Yankees and NFL games, Hawaii high school sports, select University of Hawaii games and more. KHKA also retransmits on Oceanic Spectrum digital channel 885 for the entire state of Hawaii. According to the station website, it is officially branded as CBS 1500.

I have just published a book, called “Destitute Darlings.” available on Amazon as a hardback, paperback and E-book.
It’s the true story of the 1975-76 Hawaii Islanders, then the AAA affiliate of the Padres. I was the team radio announcer on KGMB radio in Honolulu and experienced all of these two bizarre seasons.
In 1975, the Islanders were awaiting the opening of new Aloha Stadium but since contractors didn’t finish the work on team, the Islanders were forced to play the season in Honolulu Stadium, the termite palace rescued from destruction. The team went on to win the first PCL crown in team history.
In 1976, they finally moved into Aloha Stadium, which eventually led to the downfall of the franchise. The team had severe financial problems including bounced paychecks, the IRS padlocking their office ,a wrongly forfeited game, player defections and more challenges. Somehow this collection of major league vets and top Padre prospects banded together and won another title, despite having to play all playoff games on the road. The team included Bobby Valentine, Bill Almon, Rod Gaspar, Gene Richards and others.
In all my years of broadcasting baseball, this is still the most unusual season I’ve ever experienced. In 2025, I interviewed the remaining players who reflected on their feat.
