KANW FM 89.1 is a non-commercial public radio station in Albuquerque, New Mexico. KANW is owned and operated by the Albuquerque Public Schools.
KANW Radio is a non-profit, non-commercial public radio station owned and operated by Albuquerque Public Schools. KANW is the first FM station in the State of New Mexico. In 1949, Superintendent John Milne applied to the Federal Communications Commission for a license to construct and operate an FM station to serve the Albuquerque Public Schools.
KANW FM 89.1 was constructed and began operating from a small studio on the third floor of the old Albuquerque High School. The station provided classroom instructional programming operating only during school hours and was off the air during summer recess.
